Custom Sports Mouthguards in Appin & Wollondilly

Custom-Fit Protection for Rugby, Footy, Boxing, MMA & Junior Sport

One bad tackle, one stray elbow, one accidental headbutt, and you're looking at a knocked-out tooth, a fractured front tooth, or worse. Custom-fit mouthguards prevent the vast majority of dental sports injuries. The boil-and-bite guards from chemists don't.

The Australian Dental Association and Sports Medicine Australia jointly back a "no mouthguard, no play" policy for contact sports. We help families across Wollondilly meet that standard.

We make custom sports mouthguards for athletes from Appin, Wilton, Picton, Douglas Park, Menangle, Tahmoor, Camden, Campbelltown, and across the Wollondilly Shire.

Footy season starting? Boxing match coming up? Kid joining a new team?

What Is a Custom Sports Mouthguard?

A custom sports mouthguard is a dental appliance moulded precisely to your teeth, using digital scans or impressions taken at our Appin clinic. It sits over your upper teeth (and sometimes lower teeth, depending on the sport) and absorbs the force from impacts that would otherwise knock out a tooth, fracture your jaw, or split your lip.

Three types exist on the Australian market:

  • Stock mouthguards - sold in chemists. Cheapest, worst fit, least protection. Bulky and tend to fall out.

  • Boil-and-bite mouthguards - sold in sports stores. You soften them in hot water and bite down. Slightly better fit, but they distort with heat and lose their shape.

  • Custom-fit mouthguards - made by a dentist from a precise impression of your teeth. The clinical gold standard. Worn by virtually every professional athlete because they actually stay in place under impact.

The difference matters more than most people realise. The Australian Dental Association estimates that custom-fit mouthguards reduce dental trauma in contact sports by up to 60 times compared to no mouthguard at all.

Why Sports Dental Injuries Are More Costly Than People Think?

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data shows that dental trauma is one of the most common sports injuries in junior contact sports, particularly rugby, AFL, soccer, hockey, and basketball. The cost of treating a single knocked-out front tooth in Australia, including the crown, root canal treatment, and ongoing maintenance, runs into thousands of dollars over a lifetime.

A custom sports mouthguard is the single most effective preventive step you can take. It costs a fraction of the treatment that follows a single dental fracture, and most major Australian health funds cover a portion of the fee under their extras.

Worth knowing: most chemist-bought mouthguards offer minimal protection because they don't sit firmly enough to absorb shock evenly. Under impact, an ill-fitting guard can shift, fall out, or bite-through. Custom-fit guards stay where they're meant to.

'No Mouthguard, No Play' | The Official Policy for Australian Sports

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) and Sports Medicine Australia have jointly developed a mouthguard policy, urging all sports clubs to adopt a 'no mouthguard, no play' rule. This policy emphasises the importance of wearing mouthguards during all sports activities and encourages clubs to make their usage mandatory for players.

At Appin Dental Surgery, we wholeheartedly support this initiative. As your local dental health experts, we believe that prioritising safety on the field is a crucial step in preventing painful and costly dental injuries. You can learn more about the official policy on the ADA's website. If you or your child needs a custom-fitted mouthguard to comply with your club's rules and ensure maximum protection, our team is here to help.

Custom Mouthguards by Sport

Different sports place different forces on different parts of the mouth. We design each guard with the demands of your sport in mind:

Rugby Union & Rugby League

High-impact tackling sport with frequent head and jaw contact. We recommend a thick custom guard with full upper-arch coverage, designed for both juniors and adult competition.

AFL (Australian Football)

Mandatory in junior leagues across NSW. High-velocity contact, frequent ground impact. Full-coverage custom guard with reinforced front-tooth area.

Soccer (Football)

Often overlooked, but elbow and head clashes cause regular dental trauma. Recommended for goalkeepers and defenders especially. Slim-profile custom guard for clear breathing during prolonged play.

Boxing & MMA

The highest-force impact sport for the mouth. Requires the thickest, most shock-absorbent custom guard, sometimes a dual-arch design. Critical for any sparring, not just competition.

Hockey (Field & Ice)

High-velocity stick and puck/ball contact. Full coverage with extended lip protection.

Basketball & Netball

Mandated by some clubs, recommended by us. Slim-profile custom guard suits faster-paced play and frequent communication on the court.

Martial Arts (BJJ, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Karate)

Custom guards are standard for any sparring or grading. The exact design depends on whether the discipline involves face strikes.

Junior Sport

For kids and teenagers, we plan for growth. Junior mouthguards typically need replacement every 12 to 18 months as new teeth come through and the jaw develops. Eligible families can use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for some preventive work, though sports mouthguards are usually a separate item.

What a Custom Mouthguard Actually Protects You From?

A mouthguard does more than prevent a chipped tooth. Here's what's at risk in contact sports without one:

Knocked-Out & Fractured Teeth - The most common dental sports injury. A custom guard absorbs and distributes impact across the full arch so no single tooth takes the full force.

Cuts to Lips, Cheeks, and Tongue - A mouthguard cushions soft tissue from being driven against your own teeth during impact. Without one, even minor collisions cause lacerations that need stitches.

Damage to Braces, Crowns & Existing Dental Work - Orthodontic patients are particularly at risk. We design every guard to fit around braces, crowns, veneers, or dental implants, protecting your dental investment as well as your natural teeth.

Jaw Fractures & Concussion Reduction - A properly fitted guard helps stabilise the jaw on impact and may reduce concussion severity by absorbing some of the shock transmitted to the skull (the evidence here is still developing, but ADA-aligned protection is the safer position).

Long-term Dental Cost - One avoided fracture today can save thousands in crowns, root canals, and ongoing restoration over a lifetime.

Choosing the Right Protective Mouthguard

A great mouthguard doesn’t just protect, it fits like a glove, feels natural, and performs when you need it most. Whether you’re playing footy in Wilton or training at a local martial arts centre, selecting the right mouthguard can make all the difference in both comfort and protection. Don’t settle for a generic, boil-and-bite solution. At Appin Dental Surgery, we create custom mouthguards tailored to your bite and lifestyle, offering Wilton athletes and families peace of mind and maximum protection.

Snug Yet Comfortable Fit

Your mouthguard should hug your teeth and gums without feeling bulky or loose. A custom-fit design ensures better impact absorption and won’t shift during play.

Group 13.png

Easy Breathing and Swallowing

A professionally made mouthguard won’t interfere with your natural breathing or swallowing, even during high-intensity sports.

Group 13.png

Clear, Unobstructed Speech

Effective communication matters on the field. A well-designed guard lets you call plays and talk with teammates clearly, without slurring or discomfort.

Group 13.png

Optimal Thickness (Approx. 4mm)

To absorb shocks and protect teeth and jaws, your guard should be thick enough (around 4mm) in high-impact areas, but never bulky.

Group 13.png

No Gag Reflex

A properly fitted mouthguard shouldn't trigger gagging. Our custom guards are shaped precisely to your mouth for a smooth, unobtrusive fit.

Group 13.png

Tasteless and Odourless

Made from safe, medical-grade materials, our mouthguards are free of unpleasant smells or flavours, so you’ll barely notice they’re there.

Your Custom Mouthguard Fitting at Appin Dental — Step by Step

Getting a custom-fit mouthguard takes two visits, usually 2 to 3 weeks apart:

Mouthguards (5).webp
  • We do a quick dental check, then take a digital intraoral scan or traditional impression of your upper (and sometimes lower) teeth. This becomes the template for your guard. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.

  • Your guard is made by an Australian dental laboratory using TGA-approved EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) material, which is the clinical standard for impact absorption. Fabrication takes 7 to 14 working days.

  • When your guard arrives, you come back for a fitting. We check it sits firmly, doesn't trigger gagging, allows clear speech, and stays in place when you bite, talk, and breathe through it. Adjustments happen on the day.

  • You leave with cleaning instructions, a protective storage case, and a clear timeline for replacement (sooner for kids, later for adults). Bring the guard to every routine check-up for inspection.

How to Look After Your Custom Mouthguard?

Treated properly, a custom mouthguard for an adult lasts 1 to 3 years. Treated badly, it lasts a season. Here's what works:

Rinse and Air Dry After Every Use

Rinse your guard with cool or lukewarm water (never hot — hot water warps the material). Pat it dry with a clean towel and let it air-dry completely before storing. Bacteria love wet enclosed spaces.

Disinfect Regularly

Once or twice a week, soak your guard in a denture-cleaning solution or a mild antibacterial mouthwash for 15 to 30 minutes. This kills the bacteria that build up from saliva and sweat. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.

Store It Correctly

Always store your guard in the ventilated case it came in. Never leave it loose in a sports bag, in a pocket, or wrapped in a towel. Don't store it with your sweaty kit; bacteria multiply quickly.

Keep It Away from Heat

Hot water, dishwashers, hot cars, sun exposure, and microwaves all permanently warp the EVA material. Once warped, the fit is gone and the guard can't be reshaped. Keep it cool and out of direct sunlight.

Inspect Before Each Game or Training Session

Look for thinning, cracks, sharp edges, or warping. A guard that's worn through stops protecting properly. If your guard suddenly feels loose, the fit has changed and it's time for a check.

Bring It to Every Check-Up

Bring your mouthguard to every routine dental visit. We inspect it for wear, check it still fits as your teeth shift, and remake it before it fails rather than after.

When to Replace

Kids and teens

Every 12 to 18 months as new teeth come through and the jaw grows.

Adults

When you see visible damage, after any new dental work (crowns, fillings, orthodontic completion), or every 1 to 3 years, depending on use.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mouthguards

  • Custom-made mouthguards offer a more accurate fit, better protection, and a longer lifespan. They're fabricated from a precise impression of your teeth, so they don't slip during play. Boil-and-bite guards feel bulky, distort with heat, interfere with speech, and offer significantly less impact protection.

  • Cost depends on the thickness needed for your sport, whether you need single or dual-arch coverage, and any existing dental work the guard needs to fit around. We provide a written, obligation-free quote at your initial appointment. Most major Australian health funds cover a portion under General Dental or Major Dental extras.

  • Yes, and we strongly recommend them for any junior contact sport. Custom mouthguards protect growing teeth and can be designed around braces or developing dentition. Junior guards typically need replacement every 12 to 18 months as new teeth come through and the jaw grows.

  • The Australian Dental Association and Sports Medicine Australia jointly back a "no mouthguard, no play" policy for contact sports. Many junior leagues now make mouthguards mandatory. Playing without one in rugby, AFL, hockey, boxing, or MMA puts you at significant risk of dental trauma that costs far more to fix than a custom guard.

  • Adult mouthguards last 1 to 3 years with proper care. Junior mouthguards last 12 to 18 months because growing jaws change the fit. We inspect your guard at every routine check-up and recommend replacement before it fails rather than after.

  • Yes. We design each guard around braces, retainers, or a completed Invisalign treatment. For active orthodontic patients, the guard is shaped to accommodate brackets and wires while still providing protection.

  • Rinse with cool water after every use. Soak in a denture-cleaning solution or mild antibacterial mouthwash once or twice a week. Avoid bleach, hot water, dishwashers, and direct sunlight. Always store in the ventilated case provided.

  • No, that's a key advantage over boil-and-bite guards. A precision-fit custom mouthguard sits firmly against your teeth without bulk, allowing clear speech with teammates and easy breathing during high-intensity play.

  • Most major Australian funds cover a portion (sometimes all) under General Dental or Major Dental extras. We're preferred providers for NIB and Medibank, and we accept all major funds. Bring your card, and we will process the claim on the spot with HICAPS.
