Dental Crowns in Appin, Wollondilly

Custom Crowns That Protect Your Teeth and Look Completely Natural

Got a cracked tooth? A tooth weakened after root canal treatment? Or maybe a large filling that's starting to fail? A dental crown wraps around the entire visible part of your tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and appearance.

At Appin Dental Surgery, we use porcelain, zirconia, and other TGA-approved crown materials crafted by trusted Australian dental labs. Every crown is colour-matched to blend with your natural teeth.

We are the only QIP-accredited dental practice in the Wollondilly Shire, and Dr Gurinder (Shelly) Matharu brings over 19 years of clinical experience to every crown case. Patients from Appin, Wilton, Picton, Douglas Park, and across Wollondilly trust us for durable, natural-looking dental crowns.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown (sometimes called a dental cap) is a custom-made restoration that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth. It covers everything above the gum line, bringing the tooth back to its original shape, size, and function.

Think of it as a protective helmet for your tooth. Once cemented in place, a dental crown lets you bite, chew, and smile without worrying about further breakage.

Dental crowns can be made from several materials: porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, metal alloys (like gold or palladium), or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). The right choice depends on where the tooth sits in your mouth, how much biting force it handles, and your budget.

At Appin Dental Surgery, every crown is fabricated by a reputable Australian dental laboratory using only TGA-approved materials. Whether you're visiting us from Menangle, Tahmoor, or Glen Alpine, you're getting the same lab-quality craftsmanship that's trusted across the Macarthur and Wollondilly regions.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

There are several situations where a dental crown is the best option to save and restore your tooth:

Large Cavities or Extensive Decay

When the damage is too big for a standard filling, a crown gives the tooth the structural support it needs. We see this regularly with patients from Appin, Wilton, and Picton who have been putting off older fillings that are now failing.

Cracked, Chipped, or Broken Teeth

Injuries, biting on something hard, or simple wear over time can compromise a tooth. A dental crown holds it together and prevents the crack from spreading deeper.

After Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy saves the tooth, but treated teeth often become brittle. Dental crowns and root canals go hand in hand because the crown reinforces the tooth and protects it from fracture. Most dentists (including our team) recommend a crown after any root canal on a back tooth.

Severe Wear from Grinding (Bruxism) or Acid Erosion

Teeth that have been ground down lose their protective enamel and become weaker. Crowns rebuild the lost tooth structure. If you grind your teeth, ask us about combining your dental crown with an occlusal splint for long-term protection.

Badly Stained or Misshapen Teeth

If whitening or bonding won't fix the problem, a porcelain or zirconia dental crown can completely transform how the tooth looks.

As the Final Step of a Dental Implant

When you replace a missing tooth with an implant, the crown is the visible part that sits on top. It's what looks and functions like a real tooth.

Large, Failing Fillings

Old amalgam or composite fillings that are crumbling or leaking put the remaining tooth at risk. A crown is often the most reliable long-term solution.

How Dental Crowns Help

Dental crowns protect, restore, and improve your teeth in several ways:

Group 13.png

Protection

A dental crown covers and shields a weakened tooth from further decay, cracks, and wear, preventing the damage from getting worse.

Group 13.png

Restoration

Crowns restore your tooth's original shape, size, and alignment, so your bite stays balanced and comfortable.

Group 13.png

Functionality

Dental crowns let you bite and chew normally again, even on teeth that were cracked, broken, or treated with a root canal.

Aesthetics

Custom colour-matched porcelain and zirconia crowns blend naturally with your surrounding teeth, giving you a confident, natural-looking smile.

Longevity

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups at Appin Dental Surgery, dental crowns can last 10 to 15 years or longer, helping you keep your natural teeth for the long run.

Types of Dental Crowns

At Appin Dental Surgery, we offer several types of dental crowns. The best option depends on your tooth's location, the biting forces involved, your aesthetic goals, and your budget. Here's what's available:

Group 13.png

Porcelain (Ceramic) Dental Crowns

Porcelain crowns are the go-to for front teeth and any tooth that shows when you smile. They're metal-free, biocompatible, and can be colour-matched to look identical to your natural teeth. A great choice for patients with metal sensitivities or anyone who wants the most natural-looking crown.

Group 13.png

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

PFM crowns have a metal core for strength wrapped in a porcelain outer layer for appearance. They've been used successfully for decades and work on both front and back teeth. One downside: a thin grey line can sometimes become visible at the gum margin over time as gums recede.

Group 13.png

Metal Crowns (Gold, Palladium, or Base Metal Alloys)

Metal crowns are the most durable option and cause the least wear on opposing teeth. Gold alloy crowns can last 25+ years. The tradeoff is appearance: they look metallic, so they're typically placed on back molars where no one sees them.

Group 13.png

Zirconia Dental Crowns

Zirconia is one of the strongest ceramic materials used in dentistry today. It's metal-free, tooth-coloured, and handles heavy biting forces extremely well. Many dentists (including ours) now prefer zirconia for dental crowns on back teeth because it combines metal-level strength with the natural appearance of ceramic.

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Dental crowns offer a range of important benefits that help protect your teeth and improve your overall oral health:

Saves teeth that would otherwise need extraction

A dental crown can rescue a badly damaged tooth, keeping it functional for another 10, 15, or even 20+ years. That matters, because nothing works as well as your natural tooth root.

Restores full chewing function

If you have been avoiding one side of your mouth because of a cracked or weak tooth, a crown brings it back to full strength. Eat the foods you enjoy without worry.

Protects against further damage

Cracks and large cavities only get worse with time. A crown seals and shields the tooth, blocking bacteria from getting in and stopping fractures from spreading deeper.

Looks completely natural

Modern porcelain and zirconia dental crowns are colour-matched and precisely shaped to blend with your surrounding teeth. Most people can't tell which tooth has a crown.

Long-lasting results

With regular brushing, flossing, and routine check-ups at Appin Dental Surgery, dental crowns can last 10 to 15 years or more. Some patients keep their crowns for over 20 years.

Supports other restorations

Dental crowns are a key part of dental implants (as the visible tooth replacement) and dental bridges (as the anchor teeth on either side of a gap).

The Dental Crown Procedure at Appin Dental Surgery

Getting a dental crown usually takes two visits, spread over one to two weeks. Here's how the process works at our Appin clinic:

Invisalign Aligners (4)_edited.jpg
  • Dr Shelly or one of our experienced dentists examines your tooth, takes digital X-rays if needed, and discusses your options with you. You'll know the recommended crown type, the reason for it, and get a full cost breakdown before we touch anything.

  • Under local anaesthesia (you won't feel a thing), we carefully reshape the tooth by removing a thin layer of enamel to create space for the crown. If the tooth is badly broken down, we may build it up with a post and core to form a solid foundation.

  • We capture a precise model of your prepared tooth using digital scanning or traditional impressions. This model is sent to our Australian dental lab, where skilled technicians handcraft your custom crown.

  • A temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth while your permanent dental crown is being made. You can eat and speak normally, though we recommend avoiding sticky or very hard foods on that side.

  • We check the crown's fit, colour match, and bite alignment. If anything needs tweaking, we adjust it on the spot. We don't cement a crown until you're satisfied with how it looks and feels.

  • Once everything is right, we cement the crown into place, polish it, and confirm your bite is comfortable. You leave with a fully restored tooth.

Most patients from Wilton, Picton, Tahmoor, and surrounding areas tell us the procedure was much easier than they expected. If you're anxious about dental treatment, let us know in advance. We're experienced at helping nervous patients feel at ease.

Caring for Your Dental Crown After Treatment

Your dental crown doesn't need special products. The same good habits that keep your natural teeth healthy will keep your crown in great shape:

Sensitivity in the First Few Days Is Normal

Some patients notice mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or biting pressure right after crown placement. This usually settles within a few days on its own.

Go Easy for the First 48 Hours

Skip hard foods (nuts, ice, hard lollies) and sticky foods (caramels, toffees, chewing gum) for a day or two while the cement fully sets.

Brush and Floss Like Normal

Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Floss around the crown gently, sliding the floss out to the side rather than snapping it upward. The crown itself is tough, but the gum tissue around it still needs daily care to stay healthy.

Keep Up Your Regular Dental Check-Ups

We will inspect your dental crown at every routine visit to make sure it's holding up and the gum around it stays healthy. Regular check-ups at Appin Dental Surgery catch small problems before they become expensive ones.

Tell Us About Teeth Grinding

If you grind or clench your teeth at night (bruxism), let us know. We can make a custom occlusal splint (nightguard) that protects both your crown and your natural teeth while you sleep.

If Something Feels Off, Don't Wait

Loose crown, sharp edge, pain when biting, anything unusual, call (02) 9068 1369 and we'll get you in for an assessment quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Crowns

  • Dental crown cost in Australia typically ranges from $1,100 to $2,500 per crown, depending on the material. At Appin Dental Surgery, porcelain dental crowns start from approximately $1,200 and zirconia crowns from $1,300.

  • With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, most dental crowns last between 10 and 15 years. Many patients keep theirs for 20+ years.

  • No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you won't feel pain during the appointment. Some mild sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and settles on its own.

  • A dental crown covers the entire tooth (all surfaces), while a veneer covers only the front face. Crowns are for teeth that need structural repair: cracks, large cavities, root-canal-treated teeth. Veneers are primarily cosmetic, used for colour correction or reshaping front teeth.

  • Typically two appointments over one to two weeks. The first visit (45-60 minutes) involves preparing the tooth, taking impressions, and placing a temporary crown. The second visit (around 30 minutes) is for fitting and cementing the permanent dental crown.

  • It's uncommon, but it can happen if the underlying tooth has very little structure remaining or the cement weakens over time.

  • Yes. Modern porcelain and zirconia dental crowns are precisely colour-matched and shaped to blend with your surrounding teeth. Our crowns are handcrafted by Australian dental technicians who specialise in lifelike restorations. Most people won't know which tooth has a crown.

  • A tooth that needs a crown is already compromised. Without protection, the tooth risks further cracking, deeper decay, or fracture. Worst case, you lose the tooth and need a dental implant or bridge, both of which cost significantly more.
