What Is Oral Cancer Screening?
Oral cancer screening is a careful examination of your mouth, lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and throat, looking for tissue changes, lumps, ulcers, or coloured patches that could be early warning signs. Our team checks the soft tissues visually under bright clinical lighting and uses an intraoral camera to look more closely at anything unusual. We also gently feel (palpate) the floor of your mouth, jaw, and neck for any thickening or swelling. The whole screening takes only a few minutes and is included free as part of every routine dental check-up at our Appin practice.
What Is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the mouth or throat, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of the mouth, and oropharynx. According to AIHW data, head and neck cancers (which include oral cancers) are diagnosed in around 5,000 Australians each year, and survival rates are dramatically higher when the cancer is found early. Oral cancer often shows no pain in its early stages, which is exactly why a regular professional screening matters.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
Most things you spot in your mouth will be harmless, but a few signs are worth checking with a dentist if they last longer than two weeks. Between visits, watch out for:
Persistent ulcers or sores
Mouth sores that don't heal within two weeks, or that bleed easily.
Red or white patches
Unusual discolouration on the gums, tongue, cheeks, or roof of the mouth.
Lumps or thickened areas
Any new swelling in the mouth, jaw, or along the neck.
Difficulty swallowing
A persistent feeling of something stuck in your throat or pain when swallowing.
Numbness in the jaw or tongue
Tingling, numbness, or changes in sensation.
Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
A sore throat or voice change lasting more than three weeks with no clear cause.

Who Should Consider Oral Cancer Screening?
Routine oral cancer screening is part of preventive care for every adult patient at our practice, even if you don't smoke or drink. Some people carry a higher risk and may benefit from more frequent screening. Talk to our team if any of the following apply to you:
Tobacco use - Smoking, vaping, cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco all raise oral cancer risk.
Heavy alcohol consumption - Risk multiplies further when alcohol is combined with tobacco.
HPV (Human Papillomavirus) - Now a leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers in Australia, particularly in younger non-smokers.
Age over 40 - Incidence rises with age, especially in men.
Significant sun exposure - Lip cancer is linked to long-term UV exposure, common in outdoor workers across Wollondilly and Macarthur.
Previous oral cancer or pre-cancerous lesion - Personal history increases the risk of recurrence.
Weakened immune system — Including patients on long-term immunosuppressive medication.
Poor diet and oral hygiene — A diet low in fruits and vegetables, combined with neglected oral care, may contribute to cellular changes.
What Happens During an Oral Cancer Screening at Our Appin Practice?
Our screenings are quick, painless, and built into your routine check-up. Here's exactly what to expect when you sit down in the chair:

We start by reviewing your medical history and asking about lifestyle factors that affect risk, such as smoking, alcohol, and any family history of cancer. This helps us tailor the screening to your individual risk profile.
Using bright clinical lighting and gentle techniques, your dentist examines your lips, tongue (top, sides, and underneath), cheeks, gums, palate, floor of the mouth, and the back of your throat for any unusual patches, sores, or tissue changes.
Any suspicious areas are carefully evaluated. If necessary, we may recommend follow-up testing or referral to a specialist for further assessment.
If anything looks worth a closer look, we use our intraoral camera to capture a magnified image. You can see exactly what we see on the screen, which makes the conversation about findings clear and straightforward.

Yes, a monthly self-check is a useful habit. In good light with a mirror, look at your lips, gums, tongue (top, sides, underneath), cheeks, palate, and floor of mouth for unusual lumps, sores, or red/white patches. Anything that doesn't heal within two weeks should be checked by a dentist.

Yes, HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is now a leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers in Australia, particularly in younger adults who have never smoked. Vaccination, regular screening, and reducing other risk factors all help. Mention any concerns to our team during your check-up.
When oral cancer is caught early, treatment is usually less invasive and outcomes are significantly better than when it's found at a later stage. That's the whole point of screening at every routine check-up: catching anything that doesn't belong before it has time to grow.
