Proactive Dental Care for Families Across Appin and Wollondilly
At Appin Dental Surgery, the best dental care is the work you never end up needing. Our team focuses on early detection, careful diagnostics, and tailored maintenance plans, so small issues get caught when they are still small. The result is fewer fillings, fewer surprises, and a clear picture of where your oral health stands.
We see patients of every age from our Appin Road clinic, from a first dental visit for a four-year-old through to long-standing patients managing periodontal health into their seventies. We are the only QIP-accredited dental practice in the Wollondilly Shire, with 19+ years of clinical experience in our principal dentist's chair and a 30+ year dental legacy through our sister clinic in Bradbury.
Preventative dentistry (sometimes called preventive dentistry) is more than a six-monthly clean. It is a plan you build with us, based on your history, lifestyle, and risk profile, and revisited every visit.

A thorough assessment of your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues every six months. Includes digital X-rays where needed, intraoral camera diagnostics, and a written plan if anything needs follow-up.
Professional cleaning using Guided Biofilm Therapy and EMS AIRFLOW® to lift plaque, tartar, and surface stains without aggressive scraping. Gentle on sensitive teeth.
Personalised brushing, flossing, and home-care guidance based on what we see in your mouth. Particularly useful if you have braces, Invisalign, implants, or recurring gum inflammation.
A thin protective resin coating bonded into the deep grooves of children's back teeth. Best applied as soon as the adult molars come through, around age 6 and again around age 12.
Professional-strength fluoride varnish applied in-chair to strengthen enamel and reduce cavity risk. Suitable for both children and adults at higher decay risk.
A visual and tactile examination of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of mouth, and throat for early signs of oral cancer. Particularly important for patients who smoke, vape, or drink regularly.
Custom-fitted sports mouthguards moulded from your bite. Better-fitting and more protective than over-the-counter "boil and bite" versions. For rugby, hockey, AFL, basketball, MMA, and any contact sport.
A custom appliance worn while you sleep to protect your teeth from grinding (bruxism). Particularly useful if you wake with jaw pain, morning headaches, or notice wear on the chewing edges of your teeth.

Why Preventive Dentistry Matters
Preventative dentistry is the part of what we do that has the biggest long-term impact on your oral health. The benefits are practical, well-documented, and they compound over time.
Catching problems while they're still small
A cavity caught at the early enamel stage may need a small white filling or even just a fluoride application. The same cavity caught two years later may need a root canal and a crown. Six-monthly check-ups with digital X-rays mean we usually see decay, fractures, or gum inflammation early, when treatment is simpler.
Lower lifetime dental costs
Patients who keep up with regular preventative care spend less on dentistry over a lifetime than patients who only come in when something hurts. We see this in our patient base every day.
Whole-body health benefits
Periodontal disease has well-documented links to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Looking after your gums is part of looking after the rest of you.
Healthy habits for children
Children who see a dentist regularly from early childhood are far less likely to develop dental anxiety as adults. Eligible families can also access the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) to cover up to a set amount of preventative and basic restorative treatment over a two-year period.
What to Expect at a Preventive Dental Appointment
Most preventative appointments at our Appin Road clinic run 30 to 60 minutes. Whether it's your first visit or your fortieth, the structure is similar:

Conversation about your history
We start by asking about any concerns, sensitivity, recent dental work, medications, and changes to your medical history. Five minutes here often saves a lot of time later.

A full clinical examination
We check every tooth, every gum margin, your bite, your jaw joints, and your soft tissues (lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, throat) for anything that needs attention. Digital X-rays are taken where clinically indicated. Our intraoral camera lets us show you what we see, in real time.

Professional cleaning where needed
If you are due for a scale and clean, we use Guided Biofilm Therapy and EMS AIRFLOW® to lift plaque, tartar, and surface stains gently. Fluoride application may follow.

A written plan
Before you leave, you'll have a clear picture of what (if anything) needs treatment, what your recall interval should be, and what your private health fund or CDBS is likely to cover. No surprises at the front desk.
Why Wollondilly Trusts Appin Dental for Preventive Care
Preventive dentistry is a relationship, not a transaction. The dentist you see for your six-monthly check-up is the same person who will spot the early stage of a cavity, manage your gum health as you age, and have a written picture of your mouth across years. Picking the right practice matters.
Three things set us apart locally:
QIP accreditation (the only one in Wollondilly)
We are the only QIP-accredited dental practice in the Wollondilly Shire. QIP (Quality Innovation Performance) accreditation is the same independent healthcare accreditation that hospitals and GP clinics go through. It means our infection control, clinical record-keeping, patient safety processes, and team training have all been independently audited against Australia's national health service standards.
A 30+ year dental legacy
Appin Dental Surgery carries the legacy of our sister clinic, Bradbury Dental Surgery, which has cared for Macarthur families for over three decades. Our principal dentist has been treating Wollondilly and Macarthur patients for 19+ years.
A small, long-tenured team
You will see the same dentist most visits. Our front-of-house team (Joanne, Kelly, and Carly) recognise patients by name, and you won't be starting again from scratch every appointment.
QIP Accredited (Wollondilly's only)
AHPRA Registered

Local Preventive Care for the Wollondilly Shire and Macarthur Region
We see preventative patients from across Appin, Wilton, Picton, Tahmoor, Menangle, Douglas Park, and Thirlmere in the Wollondilly Shire, plus Camden, Campbelltown, Ambarvale, Glen Alpine, Rosemeadow, and Gilead in the Macarthur region.
Our preventative work is built around three things you should expect from any good dental practice: time, accuracy, and clear communication. We give you the time to ask questions. We use modern diagnostic tools (digital X-rays, intraoral cameras, periodontal probing) to be accurate about what we see. And we explain it in plain English, with the X-ray on the screen if you want to look at it with us.
If you're new to the area or thinking about changing practices, we are happy to do a first-visit assessment that includes a full chart, photos, and any X-rays we need, so we start with an accurate baseline. From there, your recall interval will be tailored to your risk profile, not a generic six-month default.

Frequently Asked Questions
Preventative dentistry is everything we do to stop dental problems before they start (or before they get worse). It includes regular check-ups, professional cleans, fluoride and sealants, oral cancer screening, and protective appliances like mouthguards and night splints. The aim is fewer fillings, fewer extractions, and a stable mouth long term.
Most patients benefit from a check-up and clean every six months, in line with Australian Dental Association guidance. Some patients (smokers, those with gum disease, diabetes, or a lot of dental work) benefit from three or four-monthly appointments. Your recall interval will be set based on what your mouth actually needs, not a generic default.
Preventative dentistry stops problems from developing or detects them early. Restorative dentistry treats problems once they're there: fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, and so on. The simplest way to put it is that good preventative care means less restorative work over time.
Eligible families can access the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which covers up to a set amount of basic dental treatment over a two-year period for children aged 0 to 17. We are CDBS-registered, and our reception team will check eligibility before your child's appointment.
Yes, we keep emergency slots available each weekday for urgent issues like dental pain, knocked-out teeth, or broken restorations. Call our Appin Road reception on (02) 9068 1369 as early in the day as you can.
We are a preferred provider for NIB and Medibank, with reduced or no gap fees for members on many preventative treatments. We accept all major Australian health funds and process HICAPS claims on the spot, so you only pay any gap at the visit.
